Opened in 1978, Narita International Airport (NRT)  handles the majority of international passenger traffic to and from Japan, and is also a major connecting point for air traffic between Asia and the Americas. It is the second-busiest passenger airport in Japan, busiest air freight hub in Japan, and fifth-busiest air freight hub in the world (2006). It serves as the main international hub of Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways. It is also a major hub for Northwest Airlines and a focus city for United Airlines.

The airport was privatised in 2004, when the Tokyo International Airport Authority was transformed into the Narita International Airport Corporation (NAA).  NAA was created to establish and manage NRT, resulting in an ambitious construction programme to increase both passenger and cargo capacity.

Revenue in 2008 was JPY189.49m.
