Brief Profile
Gulf Air has been established in 1950 as Gulf Aviation Company as a partnership between a British aviator, F. Bosworth and local investors. To begin with, it provided an air-taxi and commuter service used by local residents to shuttle between Bahrain, Doha, Dhahran and Sharjah. Soon after it started operating scheduled international flights from Bahrain, and Muscat to destinations in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, the Middle and Far East and the US.
It is fully owned by the Kingdom of Bahrain through Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding Company.
It is an international airline serving over 40 destinations worldwide.
Gulf Air Cargo
It is a dedicated division of Gulf Air.
In 2006 it saw the complete withdrawal of Abu Dhabi as a hub following the decision in September 2005, by the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, to withdraw from Gulf Air. Since then it operates on a dual hub basis between Bahrain and Muscat airports. Due to the airline being the national carrier for the United Arab Emirates for over 35 years, it has a large customer base located in Abu Dhabi so Gulf Air continued to support flights to Abu Dhabi from Bahrain and Muscat, connecting to the rest of the Gulf Air network.
