Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA)

Airport Authority Hong Kong was established in 1995 to operate and maintain Hong Kong International Airport on behalf of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

The Hong Kong International Airport is built on the reclaimed land on the mountainous islands of Chep Lap Kok and Lam Chau and part of Lantau Island .  The airport platform is 1,225 ha and is built on completely leveled land. Terminal 1 is 570,000 sq m long and is the world's largest covered space . There are two parallel runways of 3,800 m each. Terminal 2 became operational in February 2007.

Hong Kong International Airport has been ranked as the busiest airport for international air cargo since 1996. In 2006, HKIA handled 3.6m t of freight. Air cargo took up around 1% of Hong Kong's total cargo throughput, it accounted for 34.5% of its total external trade value at HK$1,745bn in 2006 with 11% increase over 2005.

In 2006 Hong Kong International Airport was ranked second busiest airport for total cargo handled, closely behind Memphis International in the US.  It is also the world's fifth busiest international passenger airport. 

Nearly 90 airlines operate at HKIA, linking Hong Kong with more than 155 locations round the world, including some 40 cities on mainland China.

The authority earned revenues of HK$8.9bn in FY 2008/9.
