Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) is a multi-modal global transportation company offering transport solutions to a wide variety of business sectors. It is one of the world's largest marine transportation companies and operates a fleet of over 850 vessels. This fleet includes containerships as well as VLCCs comprising bulk carriers, car carriers, tankers, and liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers. MOL also operates cruise ships, tugboats and domestic ferries. The company provides other services including warehousing and freight forwarding and operates marine terminals. It also has interests in finance, insurance, and real estate.
The business came into existence in 1964 as a result of the merger of the Mitsui Steamship Co. Ltd and Osaka Shosen Kaisha (O.S.K.) Line, during a period of major consolidation in the Japanese shipping industry. The new Mitsui O.S.K. Lines group was established after the merger of MOL and Navix Line in 1999.
In 2008 the company had revenues of ¥1,865.8bn.
