Gulftainer was established in 1976 in the Emirate of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.

The company's primary role is to manage and operate container terminals in Port Khalid and Khorfakkan (KCT) on behalf of Sharjah Port Authority.

KCT is located on Sharjah's Indian Ocean coast close to the Straits of Hormuz and the main east-west shipping routes. It is also a leading container transhipment port with numerous feeder ship connections to Kuwait, Pakistan, Turkey, North & South Iraq and the Comoros.

Gulftainer also owns an inland container depot, a container repair company, a freight forwarding company and a road transport subsidiary.

In 2011, the company handled 3.23m TEUs of cargo.
