2007

In late June following the approval of the Supervisory Board of Deutsche Bahn AG, it confirmed its plans to take over the entire shares in English Welsh & Scottish Railway Holding Limited (EWS) and acquire a majority share in the Spanish company Transportes Ferroviarios Especiales (Transfesa).

Following the takeover of the two companies, DB Logistics will have direct links to the transport and logistics markets in Western and Southern Europe and will strengthen its operation in the 'south-west corridor'.

Moreover, DB Logistics hopes that this acquisition will improve its business position in France, where EWS is already represented by its subsidiary Euro Cargo Rail. At the same time, DB will continue its close cooperation with SNCF, which is already successful in the single wagonload segment.

English, Welsh and Scottish Railway Limited (EWS) is a private sector company operating a rail freight business within Great Britain and mainland Europe.  Through its subsidiaries, EWS also offer rail engineering and IT consultancy services, maintenance and leasing services for rolling stock and freight services in France and through the Channel Tunnel.

EWS was launched in February 1996 after the company acquired four divisions of British Rail's rail freight operations - Rail Express Systems, Loadhaul, Transrail Freight and Mainline Freight. This was followed the purchase of the National Power Rail Unit and British Rail's European division - Railfreight Distribution.

The company's 500 locomotives provide about 8,000 rail-freight journeys a week, hauling 100m tonnes a year. Through a freight-rail joint venture with SNCF of France, EWS carries more than 1.8m tons of cargo through the Channel Tunnel. In another collaboration EWS worked with General Motors to develop the class 66 locomotive that is preferred by rail-freight companies in Europe.

EWS, who employ 5,155 people, had a 2006 turnover totalling £510m.

Since its creation EWS has invested over £600m in locomotives, wagons, depots and control systems.
