Brief Profile
Note: TNT profile will no longer be updated. Please see PostNL and TNT Express.
TNT N.V., through its two divisions Express and Mail, provides global transportation and distribution for the express and mail industries.
In 2010, the company separated its operations into two companies. TNT Mail and Express. TNT Mail encompasses the divisions: Mail in the Netherlands, Parcels in the Netherlands and Belgium, International and Real Estate. The separation was primarily due to reduced synergies between the companies, but it also enabled the two companies to have individualised strategies.
The company's global headquarters is based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
In 2010, TNT reported revenues of €11.33bn.
Brief History
Thomas National Transport was established in Australia by Ken Thomas in 1946. In 1996 TNT was taken-over by KPN, a combined nationalised Post Office/telecoms business in the Netherlands. TNT was combined with the Dutch postal services provider PTT Post (part of KPN) and the two formed the TPG Group as a subsidiary of KPN.
The TPG Group was de-merged from KPN in June 1998. The company then operated under the name TPG (TNT and PTT Post, becoming TPG Post in 2002) until 2005 when it decided to operate globally under the brand of TNT for all its activities. At the time the Dutch government retained a 10% stake plus a Golden Share.
TNT was the world's first publicly traded company with roots in the postal business and is listed on the stock exchange of Amsterdam, having delisted from the London stock exchange in March 2006, the Frankfurt stock exchange in June 2006 and the New York stock exchange in June 2007.
