BNSF Railway is one of North America's leading freight transportation companies operating in 28 states and two Canadian provinces. It is one of the top transporters of consumer goods, grain, industrial goods and low-sulfur coal. Its network includes the Midwest, Pacific Northwest and the Western, Southwestern, and Southeastern regions and ports of the country. It is among the world's top transporters of intermodal traffic.
BNSF Railway Company (BNSF Railway) was launched in 2005 when the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Company amended its name. The company is the product of nearly 400 different U.S. railroad lines which merged or were acquired. In 2009, its revenues were $15.8bn.
It is a subsidiary of holding company Burlington Santa Fe Corporation (BNSF), which through its subsidiaries, is engaged primarily in the freight freight transporation businesses.
In February 2010, Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation and BNSF Railway Company became subsidiaries of holding company Berkshire Hathaway Inc.
