Founded in 1929 by the Chilean government, LAN Airlines S.A. operates air transport for passengers, cargo and mail. The company provides additional services such as ground handling, courier transport, logistics and maintenance.

The company became privatised in 1989, before being listed on the NYSE (New York Stock Exchange) in 1997. In 2004 the company changed its name to LAN Airlines S.A. having formerly been known as LAN.
