UPS

UPS is one of the largest diversified transportation groups in the world. It has operations in over 200 countries and territories worldwide.  The company employs 426,000 employees, of which over 85% are located in the US and the rest based outside the US.

The operations of UPS are principally divided between package and non-package activities. In the US, the company is the market leader within the ground package market. Whilst UPS grew steadily in the US, it was not until 1976 that it established its first international operations outside of the US in Germany. During the 1980s another 16 acquisitions were made in Europe, although operations did not become profitable until 1998.

Since the mid-1990s, UPS has focused on providing complete supply chain solutions rather than simply developing package delivery services. During this period, it established a logistics operation and through acquisitions has grown into one of the largest in the US and is a significant logistics player in Europe. It has also added freight forwarding and banking to its portfolio of services. As one of the 'big 4' integrators, UPS owns and operates a substantial amount of transport assets. 

In 2009 UPS had a turnover of $45.3bn.
