FedEx is one of the world's largest express freight companies. It is based in Memphis, Tennessee and employs more than 290,000 employees and contractors worldwide.
The company's core operations are in the US overnight domestic express market, a segment where the company claims to have a major market share of about 39%, larger than the estimated share of its rivals like UPS (30%) and USPS (19%).
FedEx is highly dependant on the US market. Approaching 73% of sales are generated in the US, although the international services tend to be amongst the most profitable. The company recognises that globalisation of its client base will offer considerable opportunities, especially in the Pacific Rim region, and it is investing heavily in international operations. Although it continues investing heavily in international operations, in the last year three years the international proportion of business has only increased from 23% to just over 27%.
Revenue in 2008 was $35.5bn.
History
Federal Express began in 1971 with flights starting two years later. The company grew rapidly in the 1970s and '80s through acquisitions, which extended its operations internationally and into other allied sectors. The company pulled out of the intra-European market in 1992 after a period of substantial losses. However since then it has gradually re-built its service through alliances and then in 2006 through acquisition of ANC, rather than investment in its own network. In the mid 1990s the airline changed its name to FedEx.
