Brief Profile Expand

Eurotunnel is the holder, until 2086, of the Concession to operate the cross-Channel Fixed Link made up of twin rail tunnels and a service tunnel below the bed of the Straits of Dover.  It operates two terminals in Folkestone (Kent) and Coquelles (Pas-de-Calais) which provide access to the tunnel, as well as a fleet of 25 Shuttles which transport passenger vehicles or trucks.

Eurotunnel manages the infrastructure of the Channel Tunnel and operates accompanied Truck Shuttle and Passenger Shuttle (car and coach) services between Folkestone, UK and Calais, France. Eurotunnel also earns toll revenue from train operators (Eurostar for rail passengers, and EWS and SNCF for rail freight) which use the Tunnel.

Eurotunnel Freight offers a freight service between the UK and continental Europe. Another subsidiary, Europorte 2, offers Eurotunnel the potential to also operate rail services across Europe.

The Channel Tunnel opened in 1994, having accumulated considerable debt that could not be covered by passenger revenues.  The company has been operating under French bankruptcy protection laws since August 2006 in order to provide relief from debt repayments.  In May 2007, an agreement was reached with shareholders to swap their shares (units) in Eurotunnel for a stake in a new company, Groupe Eurotunnel SA (GET SA).

Up until the restructuring agreement, Eurotunnel operated under two parent companies: Eurotunnel PLC and Eurotunnel SA.  Following the restructuring, Eurotunnel SA and Eurotunnel PLC became subsidiaries of Groupe Eurotunnel SA and their names were changed to TNU SA and TNU PLC respectively.

As at the end of 2008, Eurotunnel employed 2,360 members of staff split between France and the UK.

In 2008, its revenues were €704m.
